National Savings and Investments products are government products and therefore guaranteed by the government.
There are various types of products available:
- Bank Accounts
National Savings & Investments bank accounts are operated by the Post Office and are available to anyone of any age. There are easy access savings accounts and investment accounts which have variable rates of interest.
- Fixed Interest Savings Certificates
Fixed Interest Savings accounts are lump sum investments that earn guaranteed rates of interest over set periods of time, called ‘terms’. They are free of UK income and capital gains tax, regardless of the rate you normally pay.
The minimum investment is £100 per issue and the maximum investment is £15,000 per issue.
- Index Linked Savings Certificates
Index Linked Savings Certificates ensure the value of your investment increases inline with inflation as measured by the retail prices index (RPI) and earns guaranteed interest rates on top, with all returns being free from income and capital gains tax.
The minimum investment is £100 per issue and the maximum investment is £15,000 per issue.
- Income Bonds
Income Bonds can be used to provide a useful additional income. The interest payable is variable and although taxable is paid without the deduction of tax.
The minimum purchase price is £500 and the maximum is £1 million in total.
- Guaranteed Income Bonds
Guaranteed Income Bonds provide a guaranteed monthly income without touching your capital investment. There are a range of fixed terms, allowing you to choose the one which suits you.
The minimum purchase price is £500 and the maximum is £1 million in total.
- Guaranteed Growth Bonds
Guaranteed Growth Bonds provide a guaranteed return on your investment. They offer a choice of terms allowing you to choose the one which suits you.
The minimum purchase price is £500 and the maximum is £1 million in total.
- Guaranteed Equity Bonds
Guaranteed Equity Bonds are sold in limited issues. The returns are linked to the performance of the FTSE 100 index over a set term. If the FTSE 100 index grows over the term, you will benefit from the growth. If it falls, you will get back 100% of your original investment.
- Children’s Bonus Bonds
Children’s Bonus Bonds allow you to invest in your child’s name. All returns are tax free for both child and parent. The investment term is 5 years for children at a time until the child's 21st birthday. The child must be under age 16 when the bond is taken out.
The minimum investment is £25 per issue and the maximum is £3,000 per issue, per child.
- Direct ISA
The Direct ISA is a cash ISA, allowing you to invest up to £3,600 per tax year, tax free. A higher rate of interest is payable than the Cash ISA, with the account being managed over the phone and online. The interest payable is variable.
The minimum opening deposit is £1,000 and the maximum is £3,600 per tax year.
- Cash ISA
The Cash ISA pays a variable amount of interest and is tax free.
The minimum investment is £10 and the maximum is £3,600 per tax year.
